Asbestos and Cancer
By Matthew A. Dees
Asbestos is prevelant in more than 2000 of today's products and many individuals have suffered
some type of exposure to it at some point in their lives. Most asbestos exposure is only in small
amounts of well controlled materials such as concrete, insulation and siding.
Maintenance of these types of products is vital for preventing asbestos from breaking down
into airborne fibers because of exposure to the elements. However, asbestos is so widespread, it is
difficult to calculate the damage that even a small quantity exposed to people in a wide area
can cause.
The nature of the asbestos particle being light in weight and easily
airborne, easily results in the spreading of these deadly carcinogens . Because aspestos is airborne,
asbestos-related diseases affect the respiratory system. These are deadly diseases. Even
tiny amounts of asbestos can inflict irreversible damage as symptoms usually only emerge 20 to
30 years down the road.
Mesothelioma, Asbestosis and lung cancer are a few of the deseases
due to prolonged asbestos exposure. Any contact with asbestos merits immediate medical consultation
because treatment options and survival rates are greatly improved the earlier they’re detected.
Regretably most asbestos related deseases won’t show symptoms until the disease is far advanced.
By the time many individuals are finally diagnosed with an asbestos-related conditions they normally
don't survive past one and a half years after diagnosis.
